Axial polypropylene capacitors made of polypropylene (PP) are often used in electrical devices. They are created from two sheets of thin plastic film that have electrodes charged in them to act as a dielectric. When the voltage exceeds 500V, they can take the place of electrolytic capacitors in certain applications.

For axial polypropylene capacitors, the life increases tenfold when the temperature at the component is reduced by 20 °C (1). The typical maximum expected lifetime varies for different vendors and is between 13 and 15 years.

The two capacitor types that are most often used in contemporary electronics are ceramic disc capacitors and multi-layer chip capacitors (MLCC). Due to their compact size, MLCCs are produced using surface mount technology (SMT) and are often employed. Although values up to 100 F are available, capacitance levels are usually between 1 nF and 1 F.
